38819The SukkotFestival lasts for 8 days (Orth. 9)
~
WITH THE FIRST & LAST DAYS
BEING OBSERVED AS FULL FESTIVAL DAYS
(i.e. candles & KIDDUSH in the home; abstaining from unnecessary work;
services in the synagogue). The Orthodox Jews call their 9th day SIMCHAT TORAH
(Rejoicing òf the Law) because on that day they finish reading from the Scroll the last portion
of the Book òf Deuteronomy & begin once more
the first portion of the Book
òf Genesis.
It is,
therefore, an occasion for general rejoicing which is reflected
in many ways.
~ Modern significance ~ IT TEACHES US
TO THANK G D FOR ALL THE GIFTS OF NATURE,
AS WELL AS TO CONSIDER WHAT HELP WE CAN GIVE TO THOSE PEOPLE IN THE WORLD
WHO ARE UNDERNOURISHED AND HUNGRY BY SHARING
WHAT WE HAVE WITH OTHERS!!
SOME MINOR
OTHER FESTIVALS?
A “minor” Festival is considered òf less significance that all those previous ‘major’ Festivals,
and the practical ceremonial difference is that one does NÒT light candles & have KIDDUSH
in the home! Nor does one abstain from unnecessary work or attend special services in the synagogues.
The Orthodox Jews observe a number of minor FAST days, but Liberal Jews concentrate upon the following 2 minor festivals such as
‘CHANUKAH’ & ‘PURIM’.
CHANUKAH,
“THE FEAST OF DEDICATION”,
starts on the 25th KISLEV (Dec.) & lasts for 8 days. Originally
is was based upon the victorious rebellion of the MACCABEES against the Syrian King Antiochus
who, having also occupied YUDEAH sought to replace Yudaísm with his pagan religion.
The full story can be found in the Book of MACCABEES in the Apocrypha.
We kómen later hopelijk
erop terug!

‘n klein tussendoordutje dóen?
Dit wandelen door 1001 tradities is al heel wat simpeler
dan lopen & liften héén èn weer naar de andere kant van de wereld.
Onderweg was er ook wel tijd & gelegenheid òm te lezen.
