Shattered

The fragile illusion is shattered
Into a million glistening pieces
Of what used to be.

The delicate web woven of timid happiness
Torn to shreads
Ripped to reveal the turmoil and tumult
Broken beneath it all.

(Shattered, torn
Ripped, broken.
Can you finally see
Reality?)

It's quickly all pulled together
Pretend it's all fine.
Nothing is wrong
Except for the acting.

(But then I start acting too
I go along with the charade,
Pretending it's okay.
I can't help it.)

All I want is to pull the remnants
Of broken relationships together
And to be happy
As we once all were.

(So I let it go,
Knowing
That very soon
It will happen again.)

I will hold onto this rare glimpse
Of what could be
Of what should be
Of what once was.

It will give me the strength
To face the weary days ahead,
The memory to cling to
When the illusion breaks again.

(When it is
Shattered,
Torn
And ripped apart.)

Feeble imitations
Of faded dreams
Held together by half-smiles
And hopeful wishes.

But for now,
That's all there is.
