About wing clipping

In het Engels omdat ik dit schreef naar iemand

When I planned on getting my amazon parrot, I had sworn to never ever clip it's wings. I had the same opinion as you have, birds are built to fly, that's what they're supposed to do. It's healthy, it's mentally stimulating. Parrots learn to avoid objects and even windows in their flight, so no argument there. My budgies are fully flighted and know the window-concept, they fly around the house and never hit anything. No reason to clip them, they're tame and happy and so am I.

But here's what I came to realize. Parrots that live in peoples homes often have more freedom when their wings are clipped, and from what I've seen they're far from miserable about it in most cases. Although I believe that behavioural problems may occur due to clipping. There are always other factors involved though, such as disrespecting the birds signs when he wants to be left alone.

I would never clip my birds wings for my own convenience, but I might clip them (when he's old enough and has properly learned to fly) to expand his world. He should be able to come with me when I do the groceries, when I go to the park, when I visit family and friends, etc. My budgies have each other, but my amazon needs my company.

(I'm actually thinking about this dilemma for weeks now, reading and assessing all cons and pros.. my Amazon is still young and I want to make the best decision for him.)
